How it began…

Where to start to tell you how my natural dye story started over 10 years ago…

We moved home to the South Americas, to Chile to be exact. Northern, where water is scarce, views are far, life is impossible. And still… it excited us, with 2 very small children at the age 3 and 7 we moved away from society.

To a life far away from the cities, from conformity, making our own rules as we go.

Living close to nature, and be demanded by it. Being so in sync with nature that sleep patterns change, thoughts about weather are upfront, rain is a blessing.

Building a house from scratch. Eating from the garden we grew. Enjoying the growth of trees that provide shadow.

Life was back to its basics. As life should be, with the people you love. Roof above our head, food on the table, conversations that enchant.

Dreams that vibrate, hearts that beat with the ritme of the land, souls that feel at home.

And…although this sounds like a dream come true, it’s a tough life. Back to basics is a very true naming. Every day we were very busy with the basics; water, warmth -yes the winters did get cold there too- and a bit of electricity to charge phones, use computers.

Food that needed to be made from scratch, from my own garden of that from the neighbors.

That meant that also our clothing was a challenge, with little kids who grow out of their clothing within a blink of an eye.

The city close by carried very low grade, synthetic clothes. That meant I went in search of fabrics to make our own clothing. This search brought me to the metropolitan of Chile, Santiago. I walked miles and miles out in various neighborhoods and visited many fabric stores… but unfortunately the fabrics for sale were mostly the same synthetic materials. The only thing I could find was an unbleached heavy cotton. I bought it in many meters, determined to make something pretty, comfortable out of it.

And so it started…
